The Desert Home Educators Association (DHEA) began when two military families (USMC and USAF), new to Edwards Air Force Base, discovered there was a need for an official home educator’s group aboard the base. Although there were groups in the surrounding areas, there were none dedicated exclusively to military members, DOD affiliates, and their families. With the assistance of Edwards AFB Service’s Squadron, they were able to create a charter and gain base approval for the group to function on base as a non-profit organization under AFI 34-223. They are the first ever sanctioned home educators group at Edwards. The mission of the DHEA is to provide support, encouragement, information, and organized group activities for all member home-educating families.
